Fire Scene and Evidence Preservation

The presentation will provide the Fire Chief and Command Officer with information related to the best practices for preservation of the fire scene, and evidence, in preparation for the fire origin and cause investigation. From the time of the dispatch to the fire call, and through suppression and overhaul, each firefighter has a role in the preservation of evidence relied upon by fire investigators to determine the origin and cause of the fire. As the origin and cause of the fire is often unknown when arriving on scene, it is incumbent upon all personnel to take an active role in being cognizant of potential evidence that may identify where and how the fire was ignited, and potentially aid in identifying or linking an offender to the crime scene.
