Fire Chief & EMS Director
North Fond du Lac Fire / EMS Department

North Fond du Lac, Wisconsin (Pop. 5014) is seeking applications for the position of Fire Chief / EMS Director. The position involves the overall organization, supervision, planning, and directing of both the full time and volunteer medical service and the volunteer fire department. Applicants must have a paramedic certification and a minimum Firefighter II and Fire Officer I certification. Applicants must have a minimum of three years of progressive experience. The ideal candidate will have strong administrative skills in budgeting, coordinating full time and volunteer staff, interpersonal skills and grant writing experience. A candidate is not required to have a degree in a related field but will be given extra consideration if achieved. Salary will range from $55,000 to $69,000, DOQ, plus an excellent benefits package. The Fire/EMS Department is a community oriented department with a full time paramedic EMS service and a volunteer Fire Department. The general operation budget for the 2012 Fire/EMS Department is $800,000.

JOB DESCRIPTION
Basic Functions and Responsibilities: 
This Fire Protection Instructor position is responsible for the delivery and coordination of instruction, facilitation of student learning, and the ongoing development of curriculum and learning strategies that meet the needs of students and employers.

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Facilitation of Learning. Plan, prepare and deliver instruction and facilitate the learning of students within the Fire Protection Technician Associate Degree, technical diploma continuing education, and/or contract training programs. Assess the learning outcomes of students at the unit, course, and program level.
  2. Business/Industry/Community Instruction. Develop and deliver customized training for various clients and maintain involvement with business/industry/community. Seek and prepare revenue producing contracts.
  3. Equipment use. Operate, clean, maintain, and inventory equipment necessary to perform job duties.
  4. Curriculum Development. Develop, revise, and continually update curriculum and instructional materials which are competency-based, current, consistent with relevant national standards and employer expectations, and aligned with the college policy on level of required documentation.
  5. Classroom Management. Fulfill assigned schedule, maintain accurate student attendance and grade records, maintain instructional environment with emphasis on safety, housekeeping, and equipment security, and ensure opportunities for student/participant evaluation.
  6. Interpersonal/Team Skills. Participate in activities of the instructional team, including planning, development, scheduling, and budgeting as a cooperative and professional team player.
  7. Student Support and Guidance. Advise and support students as a mentor and role model in the achievement of their learning and career goals.
  8. Professional Development. Participate in professional development activities that provide for continually updated knowledge and skills for the role of the contemporary instructor as directed by one's Individual Professional Development Plan.

Qualifications, Training, and Experience:

  1. A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree, Master's Degree preferred.
  2. A minimum of five years of recent, relevant working experience in fire protection or related field outside the area of education.
  3. One year (or equivalent) of demonstrated adult instruction and curriculum development, AND
  4. Meet Wisconsin Technical College System (WCTS) certification requirements.
  5. State of Wisconsin Firefighter I certification (or equivalent).
  6. State of Wisconsin Fire Instructor II certification (or equivalent).
  7. Ability to plan, organize, instruct, and facilitate quality education programs, including development of relevant curriculum and student assessment tools.
  8. Valid Wisconsin Driver's License and CDL Level D.

Essential Aptitudes, Skills and Knowledge:

  1. Current knowledge in the roles and responsibilities of emergency service organizations and personnel. Knowledge of current trends and principles in emergency response.
  2. Ability to support and work within a team environment.
  3. Ability to communicate effectively and maintain positive working relationships with a variety of related agencies and personnel.
  4. Ability to update instructional methods and materials and apply research studies in classroom, lab or fieldwork settings.
