Members of the Wisconsin State Fire Chiefs Association
It is with regret that I write this to inform you that our Task Force Bill did not make it to the Assembly floor for a vote during their final floor period of the 2019-20 legislative session last week. While the Senate Bill remains active, it has come to our attention that legislators in both houses have some outstanding questions and concerns that remain which have stood in the way of a positive outcome for this piece of legislation in the Senate and Assembly.
Our Lobbyist Mr. Klaetsch was able to meet with Assembly and Senate Leadership to determine why the Task Force Bill did not maintain the support necessary to receive legislative passage during the 2019-20 legislative session. Through those discussions we have been able to identify the key issue, which is the direct and indirect fiscal obligations that State of Wisconsin would be responsible for to maintain and ensure readiness of this state-based Team.
As the leaders of Wisconsin’s Fire and Emergency Services Agencies and a champion of this piece of legislation, a significant portion of this responsibility falls on the shoulders of the WSFCA. I can assure you that it is the intention of the WSFCA and its leadership to maintain communication and further educate state legislators and Governor Evers of the vital importance of this team, the Wisconsin citizens it serves and the resources necessary to maintain a strong and highly trained search and rescue task force.
So how do we move forward towards our intended outcome? In weeks to come the WSFCA Leadership will be working closely with the participating agencies in WI-TF1 to craft a research and educational plan that targets legislative and administration officials that will lead to a sustainable future for the State’s technical rescue team.
The WSFCA Leadership will be available on Wednesday at the WSFCEA meeting in the Dells and at the WSFCA Winter In-Service in Green Bay to answer any questions you may have, and solicit additional information and input from stakeholders on this matter. Should you have any immediate questions, please feel free to contact me directly.
